Nita, a young girl who is constantly being bullied by other girls she knows is trying to outrun them and takes refuge in a library., In the children's/YA section she happens upon a book about becoming a wizard. Fascinated by the premises, Nita continues to read, checking the book out. As she goes over the requirements and duties of a wizard she finds that she fits the qualifications and successfully passes the tests. She takes the pledge and becomes a wizard. The first thing she notices is her ability to hear the trees. She finds a young boy, Kit, who also has been picked on because he is Hispanic. Together Kit and Nita go on an adventure where they meet the darker side and must fight to protect their way of life.

I have read so many fantasy novels in my life, both YA and epic. I could not finish this book which is extremely unusual for me. There was no development, Everything happens over 20 pages. She reads a book, tries to cast a spell to find her pen and accidently summons a sentient star, which burps solid gold bars, and follows her around like a puppy dog. It is so bad, I have to believe the other reviews are fake.
As you can tell from all of the glowing reviews, with which I generally agree, this book has a lot going for it. I would add the following.

It takes a little while to get up to speed on how time works in this world, even with the helpful exposition provided by two friendly wizards. You really have to understand how alternate universes work in this book in order to follow the plot and appreciate the action. That's fine, and the way it all works is very satisfying. However, I think it would be very challenging and probably frustrating for the 8 or 9 year old that the publisher claims this book is aimed toward. I'm thinking more like 11 years old, and probably after having been introduced to some other sci-fi quest books first.
When I was a boy, the Young Wizards series first taught me what it felt like to be so thoroughly caught up in a story that I could feel the energy in every word, and I forgot to breathe when turning the pages. Years later I'm nearing my thirties, and a sense of nostalgia prompted me to hunt these books down again. I was expecting to find them simplistic and dull; instead I found myself just as enraptured, and admiring the effervescent yet clean writing style, and the flawlessly paced storytelling.

Duane creates sympathetic characters who are smart, snappy, yet wonderfully flawed in believable and understandable ways; her young protagonists are mature and deal with very adult problems while retaining a sense of innocence and wonder that is sometimes lost in newer, grittier YA tales (although there's nothing wrong with those less innocent tales, either; each has its place).

Nita and Kit are great role models for younger readers without being trite, dull, or overly vanilla--and the story offers some pretty heavy life lessons without beating you about the head with them. For an older reader, it's a great trip back to the excitement of youth, and a wonderful escape from the banality of everyday life. For just a little while, Duane's books can give you magic.
Wow. Got a as a gift and discovered the joy of reading again. For me, books are like old friends that I may not see very often but never forget about. Like this series. This book, these stories, never fail to thrill me, excite me, or bring me to tears. Diane Duane creates characters that you get instantly vested in. You FEEL them, understand them, they become real under the magic o her writing.
Kit and Nita are young teens who stumble across a book, separately from each other, titled "So You Want to be a Wizard." What kid EVER didn't dream of magic being real?? In this book, it IS.. And it takes everything they have to pass a test they never saw coming. Life, love, anger, death, and life again stream through this story in word-pictures that are stunning, scary, and deeply though-provoking. When was the last time you underlined character statements in a science-fiction/fantasy book? Get ready to. It's a perfect read for teenagers and adults both.. I'm over 50 and I intend to buy the whole series. Period.
Although the story was a bit hard to follow in places, I found it very entertaining and exciting...even a bit scary (but not overly so). I'm sure young teens who enjoy wizardry and Harry Potter type stories would like this as well. It is a thick book, but the story goes fast. There are also several continuing stories about the main characters to be found in other books by this author.
I was thrilled to finally own the Young Wizards series in ebook form, even if I will eventually also end up with the New Millenium editions on my as well. It'll be nice to compare the two.

I still love the stories, the characters, the settings. Diane Duane has a knack for creating worlds that you wish you could go to as well, or scenes that play out very easily in the mind's eye. And, since these are the ebooks of the original editions, I knew the continuity issues of the print versions would still be there, and the technology issues.

What surprised me were how many format errors got into the editions - missing punctuation, the word 'a' replaced by '.3.', random trademark symbols and asterisks scattered into the text, odd capitalizations, and some words changed into nonsense (like um becoming rm, or nr). There are several per chapter and while the story is still enough to draw in, these are (for me) distracting enough to break the flow.

Still, I do recommend getting the books in ebook format - after all, with 9 books in the series, and a 10th on the way, it helps to have ebook copies to take with you if you want to do a bit of reading while travelling.
