Janet Graber's THE WHITE WITCH is reminiscent thematically of Geraldine Brook's YEAR OF WONDERS, but for a younger audience. This novel sweeps middle grade readers away to a distant time when being clever could get a young girl accused of witchcraft. Graber's writing is rich in historical detail and obviously well researched. I have had great success with two book club groups who worked with the book. It would also make an excellent companion piece for a History or Science unit on the plague, the history of Great Britain, and witch trials. The characters are engaging and realistic, and the well paced drama is very compelling. This is an excellent entry point to historical fiction for readers who may be hesitant to take a break from the current obsession with paranormal romance or dystopia. Highly recommended for girls ages 10 -14 and their parents.
