This was such a surprisingly good story! I never know what to expect from a 99 cent book. Sometimes they are AWESOME, and sometimes they leave a lot to be desired. This particular story had me hooked from the first page. This is the story of Michael and his mother, Ann. Michael is a typically bullied teenage boy, very smart, very bullied, and very much regretting his life altogether. Ann is a single mother, trying to make ends meet, generally a good mother who has succumbed to her drinking problems as a way to cope with her situation.
I was hooked from the first page of this book. Michael attempts to remove himself from his incredibly difficult and painful life, only to find that what he thought had happened had mysteriously been reversed. Quickly Michael learns that his "benefactor" wants to give him everything he desires, but there's seemingly small catch....
There were so many plot points that I had not expected in this story. Even when I thought I had the story figured out and puzzled out the ending, the author threw me for a loop and kept me guessing!
While this is written in the very popular teen/young adult mindset, as a 30-something year-old I felt this is a book that both teens and parents can feel comfortable watching. While there is a small love story attached to the main plot sequence it never gets into the more heavy details, and the author thankfully keeps the storyline where it should be. It's definitely a spooky read, but at the same time well written with a lot of thought to where the characters are going to end up.
I'm very much hoping this results in a sequel, the ending of the leaves itself open to one!

The Gift eBook Jonathan Lynch Reviews
I really liked this book. It was easy to read, the language descriptive, but not overly so and the characters were properly fleshed out. The plot and pacing of the story was also good. What was great about the story was the ending. It had me floored. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes a scary, suspenseful read.
Wow, this was an amazing story! The beginning of this book was sad. You really felt for the family with the struggles they were going thru, and the desperation they felt. Then the Gift is offered, and everything changes for the better. Even though the reader knows there will be a price to pay for the amazing gift Michael accepts, the author does an outstanding job surprising you with how the debt is collected. My stomach was in a knot as I read most of this book. It's intense and dark! The Gift is a very well written book and I enjoyed it immensely even though it's not the type of story I usually read. Jonathan Lynch did an outstanding job, and I look forward to reading more of his stories.
When Michael, a bullied 17 year old, who thinks he has nothing left to live for attempts to commit suicide or does he really.
His back story is he is a boy who has never had friends, never kissed a girl much less had a girlfriend. He feels ugly and that no one cares about him and his mother works 2 job to support them, but isn't very successful and can't afford to pays all their bills. It's kind of a haze and as he writes in his diary you kind of get the feeling that he isn't sure exactly what happen. He finds a message from a mysterious black figure, that tells him he can receive The Gift, if he is willing to do something in his old age. This made me think of taking a pact with the devil. He of course accepts the gift he has nothing to lose, right?
At first everything is all peachy keen and he gets everything he can possibly want. His mom and him have a better life and he is getting attention like never before. This is where it gets complicated, the black figure comes back and demands payment. What will Michael do? Did he make the best decision or was he wrong?
The ending of this book had a big twist and I was delighted in with how it just kind of popped out of nowhere.
LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!
A teenager is incredibly depressed from the constant bullying at school..... and being so poor that he mother had to get two jobs just to make ends meet.... He reaches the end of his rope, and tries to commit suicide. The suicide attempt fails mysteriously ..... then a stranger arrives and offers him The Gift.
This was a book I really related to.... I myself was a book reading nerd in school that got bullied so much that I sat in the bathroom at lunch, hungry because I wasn't taking advantage of the free lunch that I received because we were poor. I could see myself in his position... and I know for a fact that if I were in Micheal's place.... I would have agreed to The Gift also.
The creepiness of certain scenes were off the charts.... it had my heart pounding and I even had creepy dreams about them.
I tore through this book.... It had a great storyline and even more awesome characters... Micheal and his mom were very easy to relate to and I loved them.
I would recommend this book to anyone really. It was a fast, incredibly entertaining read.
