What I LOVED about this book:

the author sucked me into the characters from the very first page. Each and every one is well rounded and unique. I loved the playful banter between the man and wife, this kind of writing 'shows rather than tells' us their personalities so right from the start it felt like I knew them. She loves her husband and the reader does too which is why 'what happens' is so traumatic.
I won't be spoiling it (cos you know from the title what happens) but the emotion portrayed is raw and gutsy; the first half of the book my heart was in my throat. I like a book that can trigger emotion from the reader. I want to CARE what happens to the characters and I did.

What I DIDN'T like about the book:

I thought that the intimate interaction between husband and wife was borderline smutty. While not neccesarily explicit I suppose if you were to give it a TV rating it would be a strong PG-13 (but that being said I would not recommend this book to 13 year olds, the subject matter is just too mature). I am told that the next two books in the series are not like this so I'll let you know. :)

Also, some things just didn't seem right for the time. It seemed strange to me that the female lead wouldn't consider a farmer as a potential 2nd husband (because of her social standing- but this was the WEST and she had a FARM to look after so who cares about social standing) and then she acts contrary to her 'proper upbringing' by risking her reputation on several occasions. I was puzzled.

And a word in general:

One little pet peeve.. (and I'm not just picking on this author, it seems like every western book has it) what is up with the smell of perspiration being a turn on? I'm sorry but there is NOTHING pleasant about the smell of sweat, male or female. SOAP. Now SOAP smells good. And speaking of soap, have you noticed how the women in these books always smell like violets or rosewater (don't ask me how they get this on the trail) but men smell like horses and perspiration and we're supposed to swoon. What's up with that? I'm waiting for a book that describes a woman as stinkin like chicken mess meets fried onions and the male hero getting a whiff and saying "Now THERES a woman I'd like to get my arms around". See, it just won't happen.

All that being said, I enjoyed the book, it held my interest and I plan on reading the rest of the series.

An Unexpected Widow The Colorado Brides Series Book 1 edition by Carré White Romance eBooks Reviews

I wavered between 2 & 3 stars but decided on 3, since it did keep my interest. It's already been established that this is NOT a Christian romance & I knew that before I bought it (okay.... I got it for free).

I do have a couple of issues with the book though. First of all, the lack of character development was disappointing. The dialogue could have been more descriptive, instead of just back-and-forth banter between characters. Sometimes it was hard to follow who said what. I would almost describe it as monotone banter since it lacked depth.

Also, the author should have done more research into the era. The term "Ms." was not used in the sense that it is used today. It was uncommonly used in the 1800's to describe a Mistress, not as a determination of marital status. Secondly, the phrase "Hell to the no" was not invented until 2005 (it did make me laugh though in a cynical way). There were several 20th century phrases that the author used. There were also some grammar/punctuation errors. I'm not sure if the author had an editor or just needed a better one but for me, I can't stand to read a book that has incorrect word usage, improper punctuation (there were many unnecessary comma's) & misspelled words.

I had a distinct feeling that the author did not have a firm grasp on historical events, proper grammar, etc. for this era. I will say the storyline kept my interest but the book could use some major improvements. There are a lot of 1-star reviews on this book (which would normally sway me) & I hope the author reads these & make adjustments to future novels.
This was a great story. As one reviewer said, the author sucks you in to the characters and story line right away. There is no reading a lot of pages before you can even get interested. The only thing I would change would be the (what some folks might not even consider off-color language) curses in the book. I don't think they need to be there, and to me, it makes me not want to read anything else this author writes. However, one reviewer did say the others in this series are different. So, I might try one more. I know there will never be another Janette Oke, but she was able to tell stories that were every bit as awesome and she did not have the need to use this kind of language. This is the first novel I have read in a very long time. It is a good one, as I said, and if you are not put off by the language (and there is not a lot of it) then you will truly love this book! Oh yes, I also agree with the reviewer who mentioned the perspiration being a turn-on. I do not think that is realistic. Maybe it is because I never lived in the old west! )
I had the unexpected pleasure of reading a first work by Carre White. This story about the first of four sisters to make her way to Denver City is an original attempt to capture the atmosphere of an era of settlement, while examining relationships forged during that era. The hazards of frontier life, the changing times, and the flux of events and their effects on frontier men and women are treated with plausible situations, characters and dialogue. In addition to action scenes, there is realistic detail and common sense lessons that emerge from the actions and dialogue of the characters. Ms. White, through her believable characters and realistic dialogue captures the essence of the Christian work ethic. She also combines this with an effective handling of the emotional attraction between the main characters. Denver City has it all a saloon, a parlor house and a church. The problems of alcoholism, prostitution and isolation are handled with a light, non-sermonizing touch, and the resolution of the new widow's crisis is a testament to the frontier community mentality and the strong and flexible frontier woman. I look forward to reading Ms. White's Unexpected series and expect that she will expand on this innovative and original depiction of the settling of Denver City.
