For as long as I can remember, I have had a recurring dream where I am disembarking from a plane into a country where I know no one, have no money but a credit card, and don't speak the language. That dream has always, for me, defined adrenaline rush. The scenario isn't exact, but that is pretty much where the Carer starts. The story, told in present tense, pitches forward like a rushing crowd, with short, choppy sentences and snappy dialogue. Malcolm, the protagonist, isn't a fuzzy, endearing sort of hero. He's a survivor, with a cool pragmatism that's admirable. No spoilers, but Malcolm's day to day is a fascinating character study. Great book, whether you are prepared to uproot your life or just dream about it.

The Carer A novella edition by Scott Nelson Melissa Alvarez Kieran Macdonald Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The Carer is a fast read that pulls you in from the start and doesn't let up until it's over. I read it in one sitting.

I particularly liked the London location. Characters solid - though not necessarily likeable...

As for the story itself, I'd sum it up as gritty, dark and disturbing. At the centre of the plot is the age-old odd couple pairing, with a lack of checks and balances steadily pushing their relationship into a spiral of neglect and then eventually abuse.

Theme-wise, The Carer turns the spotlight on several of our society's big issues - including how we're shifting more and more responsibility for our parents’ wellbeing into the hands of unskilled and relatively-poorly strangers who are often unproven and uncommitted.

Particularly topical, given how rapidly the developed world is aging. The perfect book club book!
This would be a great book-club pick. It's an engaging and thought-provocing read.
A good read, written in the present moment with a very descriptive style. Read this in a sitting, and thoroughly enjoyed it. My first for this author.
This was a fast, absorbing read. The characters and settings are realistic which makes it particularly unsettling. To observe how easily a person can justify cruel acts and the dehumanization of another person is distressing yet engrossing. Loved the ending! Go Flo!
A cautionary tale for those of us in the "sandwich generation", The Carer is a study in human nature and the circumstances that can take us to places we never thought we'd go.
Scott Nelson's The Carer is a great and captivating read. It's the small details about living in the UK's capital that bring the story to life. And even though the main character starts developing totally inappropriate behavior as the story progresses, following the plot the reader can relate to him and the overwhelming situation he's trying to master. Definitely a book I can recommend.
A great summer read! Takes some unexpected and dark turns towards the end. It would be hard to say more than that without spoiling it. I'll just say I felt like this book was worth the price.
